Bio
Stefanie Verhoef (Amsterdam, 1988) is a Dutch/Danish artist and contemporary jewellery designer living and working in Amsterdam, Netherlands. She makes contemporary jewellery with a conceptual character. Her designs are defined by a rough-edged yet delicate aesthetic, accompanied by technically playful elements. She was trained as a goldsmith during a technical education in Amsterdam and after that received her BA in Fine Arts and in Education from the Academie voor Beeldende Vorming (now: Breitner Academie). Each of her collections has its own form of language, telling stories of personal observations and fascinations. In her work, she loves to combine technique with concept and explores the boundaries where art and design meet.
Statement
The experience of art is very much a matter of feeling and understanding in your own personal and private way.I think of creating art as a great personal and private act.
As wearing jewellery can be
For me, the process of creating is reliant on my personal development and perspective. It’s very intimate. My work reflects my state of mind and as creating is a mode of thinking, it is a mode of processing.
Analyzing my work and my personal processes is an important drive for me as an artist.
In the ongoing process of creating, I allow my perspective to shift and my designs to grow.
This explains my need for series. One first piece is always followed by a string of new pieces, evolving their way. A series is never finished. It can be paused for a certain amount of time while other ideas get more attention. But there always comes a point where I look back at the pieces and get re-inspired for them. Thus, my collections grow with me.
My collections tell stories of observations or fascinations. Reading back about them in chronological order reads as chapters of a personal journey.
