Bio

Claus Bury (*1946) is a German sculptor and goldsmith. His artistic journey began in the 1960s with training as a goldsmith at the Akademie Staatliche Zeichenakademie in Hanau (1962-1965) and Pforzheim (1965-1968), leading to a celebrated and influential role in the international auteur jewellery scene. In 1979, Bury undertook a radical departure, abandoning jewellery design for large-scale sculpture and fine art. This pivotal shift coincided with a relocation to Providence, Rhode Island, where he developed his distinctive approach.

Over the past four decades, Bury has created nearly one hundred monumental sculptures across the countryside and cities of Europe. His teaching positions at the Bergische Universität Wuppertal (1997-2002) and the Academy of Fine Arts Nuremberg (2003-2011) have influenced generations of artists.

Statement

Claus Bury's sculptures explore the intersection of geometric form and spatial experience. Working with elementary geometric bodies—squares, cubes, triangles, and pyramids—his practice engages rigorously with mathematical systems such as the Fibonacci sequence and the Golden Section, while introducing witty displacements of horizontal and vertical planes. Inspired by the architectural logic of ancient civilizations, Bury's works create immersive environments where visitors are invited to wander, traverse, and climb. Each work responds with precision to its specific context, articulating an architectural language that honors both human experience and the environment.
