I chose to explore the question, "What would happen if roots grew upward?" This question offers a philosophical and metaphorical examination of the "what if" concept and evokes a vivid image of a fundamental change in the natural order. Roots, which typically grow downward, symbolize stability, grounding, and connection to the earth. This question suggests the possibility of viewing the past—our "roots"—from an unconventional perspective, not as a force that confines us to one place, but as one that propels us toward an unexpected and transformative future. The world we inhabit is subject to constant disruptions and changes. Roots, representing our personal and collective histories, cling to the past, yet they are simultaneously uprooted, shaken, and fragmented into shards. It is our task to gather these scattered pieces and attempt to reassemble them. This process invites us to reflect on how we construct our future and to consider how we might create a better world from these fragments.
The interplay between strong, engineered, rigid, and stable metal and the delicate, fragile roots shaped by natural forces represents a mutual collaboration between humanity and its environment. This dialogue highlights the profound and unavoidable connection between human creativity and the world in which it is cultivated, emphasizing the reciprocity between nature and culture, growth and destruction.
Memory Network Series
Eden Herman Rosenblum explores layers of memory rooted in her past. In “Memory Network,” she creates objects from metal mesh, embedding schematic figures that evoke early childhood. The rigidity of metal contrasts with hand-applied paper layers that soften the grid and individualize each form. This interplay highlights the tension between preserving memory and blurring its imprint. Eden merges formal inquiry with emotional impulses, allowing works to remain open, tactile, and guided by both material and feeling.
