Florian Milker was born in Weimar in 1984. After earning a vocational diploma in design in Erfurt, he completed his apprenticeship as a goldsmith in 2006. Between 2006 and 2009, he worked as a goldsmith for two jewellery galleries. From 2009 to 2015, Milker studied small-scale sculpture and jewellery at Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design in Halle (Saale) in the class of Prof. Daniel Kruger, under whom he completed his studies as a master student in 2016.Milker has been a freelance artist since 2016 and has already presented his work in galleries, art fairs, and exhibitions internationally. He works as a freelance lecturer at Burg Giebichenstein and NASCAD Halifax, and was a co-organiser of the Zimmerhof Jewelry Symposium 2016 and the Erfurt Jewelry Symposium 2025.
Milker lives and works in Leipzig, Germany.
Statement
If I were to describe my work, the common term “jewelry” is rather inappropriate. While most of my pieces can indeed be worn on the body, they possess an inherent, object-like quality that defines their essence and character. Rather, the fact that they can be worn opens up a broader context—one that points to the need to wear something on the body and questions the reasons behind it.I’m interested in why we make something our own, why we want to complement ourselves with something, and why we tend to hide other aspects of ourselves. What values do we ascribe to the things we surround ourselves with, and how do we evaluate what moves us internally?
My work explores the fundamental questions of our longings and fears, how we deal with them, and what we project outwardly. I view my pieces precisely as these “memories,” intended to remind their wearers and viewers of the treasure they already carry within themselves. Thus, the objects are an embodiment of what moves us; through their form and material, they enable a sensory experience. My playful approach to materials and techniques continually sparks my curiosity—a central source of my practical work.
