Inspired by erotic symbolism and religious themes in painting. Merging themes of intimacy and secrecy with the craft traditions of historical art and design. The locket reveals a miniature relief scene, hidden within as a private, intimate secret. The contrast between the austere exterior and the sensuous interior captures the tension between public decorum and private desire, a duality often presented in both mourning mementoes and historical erotica. The tactile quality of the carved wood, along with the details, makes this piece function as an ornament and as a narrative object at once. Sober, playful, provocative. The classic term "ecce homo" is repurposed in a taunting manner, reflecting on the superficial desires and self-importance of the human species..

Bio

Bas Bouman is a visual artist and jewelry designer, born and based in the Netherlands. Got his B.A. in design at Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht (HKU), where he got infected with the jewelry virus. Moved on to study at Sandberg Institute in Amsterdam, until his M.A.in Fine Art. His work revolves around the concept of memories; trophies; souvenirs; relics; amulets. And it speaks the language of simple, but powerful materials. Materials that carry the meanings and memories of its former life, and echo some shamanistic and ethnic values.

Statement

My body of work deals with the inner value of material. The language of religious value or iconographical and mythological symbols: the value of the materials life before, with all its meanings, its memories, its scars.
I work mainly with the concept of relics, added mystique value and physical remains, and give them a contemporary form.
