The Bavarian Academy of Fine Arts is an association of leading personalities of great reputation in the world of art. It was founded in 1948 by the Free State of Bavaria (Freistaat Bayern) as the most important centre for cultivation of the arts. It represents the revival of one of the ideas of the Royal Academy of Arts in Munich, founded in 1808, which - according to Schelling's memorandum of association - was supposed to be the liberal society of art. The decree of 1948 determined that the Academy has to "observe permanently and to support the development of arts in any way appearing suitable or to offer suggestions for its support". In addition it is its task to contribute to the intellectual discussion between arts as well as between art and society and to break a lance for the dignity of the arts.
