Dimitar Stankov was born and raised in Sofia, Bulgaria. His artistic work is mainly represented in contemporary jewellery and art objects. At the age of 14 he started his art education at the Secondary School for Applied Arts ‘Saint Luca’ and then continued his studies in Metal Design at the National Art Academy in Sofia where he received his BA degree in Applied Arts. In 2011 Dimitar received his second BA in Fine Arts and in 2013, his MA degree and also the Jewellery Design and Silversmithing award from The Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp. Since then Dimitar is based in Brussels where he also has his studio.Statement
Dimitar Stankov believes that sound has a very strong effect on the human mind and body. According to him, the sound has the ability to interact with human brains and leave lasting traces. Inspired by this, he decided to use these potentialities to visualize sound in cornstarch using a study of visible sound and vibration, cymatics. The idea to perform this research came while listening to a traditional Bulgarian music instrument the so-called Kaba bagpipe and all the memories that appeared in his mind.
Considering key words as sound and silence, melody and harmony, form and structure, colour, rhythm, and texture the sketches were recreated into objects.
With his research, Dimitar seeks a way to depict the sound images emerging in human mind after its interaction with certain sound or music and the way to metamorphose them into art objects or jewellery that can be perceived not only mentally, but also physically.
