Bio
Jaiik Lee received his B.F.A. and M.F.A from Hongik Universitiy in Seoul, Korea and studied metal arts at Rochester Institute of Technology graduate school in the U.S.. Besides he is known as a metal object and installation artist at the moment, is also a jeweler using various materials such as recycled leather board and split leather. His work has been performed under sub-themes: evolution, variation, symmetry, and dismantlement. As he wants to present phenomena in not only humans’ lives but also in the lives of all living things, he says that his work is a process of how organic living things, including himself, have changed to reality by capturing various moments through a formative work.Statement
I've been making metal objects with the theme of life variation and evolution for a long time. Since various forms of experiments were essential to make them, I began to make small handicrafts of various forms using materials with flexible properties. The works have been transformed into a series of art ornaments called 'Lifeforms'.Recycled leather boards and split leather cut into subtle different patterns, and twisted and inflated organic forms, present moments of life wriggling to preserve themselves in face-to-face situations. It is a process of capturing various moments through formulation to express and show the phenomena of life, not only humans, but also all life, and drawing changes in how organic life, including myself, has been changed in line with reality so far.
