Course Overview:
At UCA we offer a degree course in BA (Hons) Jewellery & Silversmithing and a postgraduate MA Jewellery course. Both of these courses are based in state-of-the-art jewellery workshops at the University’s Farnham campus.
The BA(Hons) Jewellery & Silversmithing course offers you the opportunity to develop studio based approaches to designing and making jewellery, using methods that are both traditional and experimental. It encourages the exploration and manipulation of traditional and contemporary materials. You will enjoy well-equipped facilities, supported by a team of staff who are all practicing designers/makers and a vibrant programme of guest lectures, workshops and talks. Individual creative expression is very important. Our aim is to help you develop a personal design identity, providing a stimulating creative environment where innovation is encouraged and you’re able to pursue and realise your ideas.
The degree course will support you to become a creative and distinctive designer/maker. You explore traditional and more contemporary methods of craftsmanship as well as work with new technology and it's applications. The course prepares you to progress into the industry as a competent and confident designer/maker. Our students and graduates have an excellent reputation within the industry and have had outstanding successes in major competitions, such as the Goldsmith's Company Award, Bright Young Gems and the Guild of Enamellers' Bursary Award.
The MA Jewellery course is suited to highly motivated design professionals and graduates who wish to work at the forefront of their creative discipline, developing their creative skills honing in on their creative skills and understanding of jewellery in practice. It's a project-led and studio-based course. Rigorous research will encourage you to explore a wide range of approaches, from traditional to contemporary influences of art, craft, design and technology. As a student on this course, you'll benefit from teaching by leading specialist designers, artists and crafts experts. You'll get to create a range of objects and experiment with different materials and processes, to develop your creative thinking ; the opportunities and ideas are unrestricted, and we encourage our students to enhance their own creative journey through practice and theoretical learning.
Our Farnham campus offers extraordinary facilities with extensive workshops and equipment to support your study. It's also home to the Crafts Study Centre - a purpose-built museum, research centre and gallery dedicated to crafts.
