Nanna Obel has her jewellery practice just outside of Copenhagen, Denmark. She was educated at The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts as a graphic designer and worked in that field for 15 years before changing career path. After intensive goldsmiths courses and a degree from The Institute of Precious Metals in Copenhagen, she is now developing her unique jewellery in her studio and exhibits locally and internationally.
Statement
I find the themes for my jewellery in the media news flow. If I’m touched and I can relate to a story, I save it in my idea bank. The narrative dictates the shapes and the materials of my pieces and I never know what the final piece will look like at the beginning of the process. I’m often surprised by the final result. My background as a graphic designer makes me very visually orientated and I get inspired by collage art, old photos, typography, packaging, signage - all kinds of compositions.
I enjoy combining photos with quotes and decorative elements to create narratives with serious themes and a humoristic twist. Hopefully, I make the viewer reflect on the stories.
