Bio
Wanshu Li is originally from China and currently based in Edinburgh, United Kingdom. She studied Jewellery and Silversmithing at the Beijing University of Technology (2009-2013), then achieved her master degree at the Edinburgh College of Art (2014-2016). After finishing her study, she spent a year as an Artist in Residence in jewellery department of ECA to continue developing her own practice.Statement
Wanshu’s jewellery is focused on exploring the multi-sensory experience and making tactile wearable pieces, which involve different sensory experiences such as vision, sound, and touch. These sensory experiences could be perceived by interacting with light, body movements and tactile moving beads in her work.The inspiration for her recent jewellery series “Go with the Glow” stems from capturing the luminous and dynamic moments in the natural world. She was deeply attracted by free-swimming marine animals. For example jellyfish, which is soft, light, and glowing with the characteristics of amazing colours.Wanshu developed her work by experimenting with acrylic, moving beads, ultraviolet light, ultraviolet light reactive nylon wire, light conduct medium and fluorescent paints resulting in light-weighted, tactile, playful and luminous pieces. The nylon wires under UV light creates an amazing fluorescent effect and provide a pleasant and vivid visual enjoyment for the wearers and viewers. Moreover, the pieces create subtle sounds, following freely with the movements of the body.
