Bio
This duality of such a life is much like the duality of jewelry. Jewelry must be outwardly aesthetical while also having a practical side. Moreover, jewelry can be exhibited but can also be in a movement when it's with people. I think this dual property of jewelry is like the irony of life. Therefore, for me, the act of wearing jewelry is an expansion and fulfillment of myself and my life. This kind of fulfillment is not only the kind visible to the eye but also one that brings psychological contentment.Statement
What is the relationship between written and visual language for an artist who expresses something intangible. Is it possible for something that has been expressed through writing to be captured in the same way as a tangible object. If it is impossible, how should the content be converted. These are relevant questions to every artist but it is especially important to Ji-Young Kim as she presents her jewelry and metal art through her first solo exhibition.Ji-Young Kim has worked as a television writer for a long time, telling the stories about herself and those around her through writing. After becoming a jewelry artist in recent years, she focused her attention on creating jewelry especially in the last few years and has presented her work through many exhibitions abroad. Through this process, the artist has—more than anything else—tried to become familiar with the visual language new to her and to continue to express herself through it. Instead of with the text familiar to her, she has tried to establish a new world in the solid material world and the stationary forms that are built from it, as well as in the most scaled down space that is jewelry.
Ji-Young Kim’s jewelry and metal object, which is mainly created from metal, has its foundation on geometrical form. Geometrical form is a figure composed of mathematical relation and represents the world of strict order. It is not a reflection of nature but rather a purely abstract form created from human thought. The artist takes the static space of this kind of geometrical form as the body and through the fusion and repetition of diverse details, adds to the complex image. Despite it being a simple composition, each element interpenetrates, reflects, or repeats through various combinations to disturb the static image of the body.
In particular, when it comes to repetitive elements that pierce through the body or are structurally connected to each other, they move or create waves through external forces or contact and thus give the feeling of movement to the work. Especially in the case of jewelry, when thinking about the fact that it will be constantly moving when worn on the human body, the movement and visual variability of these elements are the most distinct characteristics. Additionally, the use of overlapping photo images; plastic sheets which make various light effects; as well as gems and amber which give off intense light and color, are also effective.
Ji-Young Kim intends to symbolically convey her personal inner world through the visual effects created from these works. These are mainly the artist’s ideas about things like the psychological changes corresponding with natural phenomena like wind, light, and celestial bodies; or the introspections on the duality or ambiguity of objects. I anticipate that as the artist’s technical skills and work experience builds up, the stories she has been telling with writing can now be conveyed through metal artwork more intensely and deeply than ever before.
